Honest Pros and Cons

What LibreChat Does Well

  • Multi-model UI is best-in-class. No other self-hosted chat app handles model switching as smoothly across this many providers.
  • Active development. Updates weekly. MCP support, Responses API, and new providers added regularly.
  • MIT license. Fully open-source with no restrictions. Deploy commercially, modify freely.
  • Docker setup is genuinely easy. One docker compose up and it works.
  • Multi-user support. Admin panel, user management, rate limiting — ready for team use out of the box.

Where LibreChat Falls Short

  • Resource hungry. MongoDB + MeiliSearch + the app itself uses 2-4GB RAM before you even load a model. On a small VPS, that leaves less room for Ollama.
  • Configuration complexity. librechat.yaml is powerful but verbose. Adding a new provider means editing YAML, restarting Docker, and sometimes debugging formatting issues.
  • Not an agent platform. The agent features exist but LibreChat is fundamentally a chat UI, not an autonomous agent framework. It doesn't persist memory across sessions, connect to messaging apps, or run unattended.
  • No mobile app. Web-only. Works on mobile browsers but there's no native app experience.
  • Search can be slow. MeiliSearch indexing on large conversation histories (10,000+ messages) introduces noticeable latency.

LibreChat vs Alternatives

vs Open WebUI

Open WebUI is the other major self-hosted chat option. It's lighter (no MongoDB dependency), has native Ollama integration, and includes RAG out of the box.
